This document describes how to use SecureCRT. SecureCRT is a Secure Shell (SSH) program for Windows. SSH provides a secure connection between your local computer and a computer somewhere else (a remote server) that allows you to send commands or run programs on that server.

Obtaining and Installing SecureCRT

UC Davis Staff and Faculty should check with their departmental technical staff to find out if SecureCRT licenses have already been obtained for their use. If not, the program is available for purchase and download via http://my.ucdavis.edu/software

Connecting to UCD

When you start SecureCRT, you will be presented the option of connecting to preloaded locations.

Select "UCD Unix System (ISUN)" then click the Connect button. This will create a connection with one of the ISUN servers.

  • For the first session with a given server, you will see a host key database screen. Click "Accept & Save"" to accept the host/server.

Disconnecting

To log out from a central campus UNIX server (ISUN) enter "exit" (without the quotes) and hit the key. Always logout from the server when you are finished with a session. Different user shells require different commands to logout. "Exit" is the correct command for the default user shell on the ISUN systems. If you are unsure how to logout, go to the SecureCRT File menu and select Close. SecureCRT will notify you when the connection is closed.
