| Configuring Outlook 2007 for POP

This article pertains to installs on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and
Windows Vista. Due to variances in the operating systems, the look of
the dialog boxes may differ, however the install process is still the
same. Windows Vista users may experience additional dialog boxes that
require confirmation of changes.
In this article we will be
setting up Outlook 2007 to access "John Smith's" email account via POP.
His email address is jsmith@ucdavis.edu and his UCD LoginID is
jsmith
- Start by opening Outlook
- If a wizard pops up when you start Outlook, click Cancel to close the window,
otherwise:
- Go to the Tools menu
and select Account Settings...

- E-mail Accounts
- Make sure you are in the E-mail
tab and click on New...

- Auto Account Setup
- Check the box for Manually
configure server settings or additional server types and click Next

- Choose E-mail Service
- Select Internet E-mail
and click Next

- Internet E-mail Settings
- For Your Name, type
in your name as you would like it to appear to others on your sent
messages.
- For E-mail Address,
type in your email address as you would like it to appear to others on
your sent messages.
- For Account Type,
select POP3
- For Incoming mail server,
type in mail.ucdavis.edu
- For Outgoing mail server
(SMTP), type in smtp.ucdavis.edu
- For User Name, type
in your UC Davis LoginID
- For Password, you
may type in your UC Davis password and check the box to remember if you
would like this feature. Otherwise you can type in your password every
time you want to check your mail.
- Click on the More Settings
... button.

- Internet E-mail Settings: Advanced
- Go to the Advanced
tab
- For Incoming Server (POP3),
put a check mark to enable This server requires an encrypted
connection (SSL).
- Make sure this port number is 995.
- For Outgoing Server
(SMTP), and Use the
following type of encrypted connection, select TLS.
- Change the Outgoing
server
(SMTP) port number to 587.
- Note: If you are
unable to send mail with the SMTP port set to 587, you can try setting
the outgoing port back to 25. Some ISPs block port 25, however, and if
you cannot send mail either way, you should contact your ISP to see if
they will enable one of those ports for your account. Also, whenever
you make a change, you may need to quit and restart Outlook for this
change to take effect.
- You can also set Outlook to Leave
a copy of messages on the server according to your preference.
- Go to the Outgoing Server
tab

- Internet E-mail Settings: Outgoing Server
- Check the box for My
Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
- Make sure Use same settings
as my incoming mail server is selected
- Click OK

- Internet E-mail Settings
- If you are brought back to this screen, click Next.

- Congratulations!
- If you are brought back to this screen, click Finish.

- E-mail Accounts
- If you are brought back to this screen, click Close. You
are now down with the setup.

- If you are prompted for your password, type in your password, you
may choose to have Outlook Remember
Password if you like, otherwise you will be prompted each time
you start Outlook. Click OK.
